A BREIF HISTORY

The history of Mountain Shadows’ Baptist Church reaches back to 1993. At that time, Pastor Jeff Salomon came into disagreement with the deacons of West Street Baptist Church in Pueblo, where he pastored. The disagreement became insurmountable, and Pastor Salomon agreed to resign. However, he did not believe God was calling him to leave the area, and with the encouragement of several families, he decided to start another church. As a result, Pastor Salomon became a church planting missionary with the Baptist Church Planters’ Mission, and the Community Baptist Fellowship began. Community Baptist met in a storefront for the next nine years as they sought to become established and grow.
At the same time, Grace Baptist Church on Pine Street was facing its own struggles. The church was initially established as “Grace Community Church” in the 1930s and grew to become a significant ministry, offering an alternative to the heavily Catholic presence in Pueblo. Over the years, they began to decline, and by the late 1990s and early 2000s, the church was struggling financially.
Throughout this time, the Community worked in close fellowship with Grace Baptist and Liberty Baptist of Pueblo. Since they were all smaller churches the idea of merging and forming one bigger church was discussed in January of 1999. By July 1999, the congregations of Community and Grace voted to merge. By the end of 1999, Grace Baptist’s building was under contract, the two congregations were meeting together as Grace Community Baptist Fellowship, and the search for land was underway. Without a permanent place to meet, the church met at the Ramada Inn, a local park, and the Gordons’ home before settling into the Rec Center at Liberty Point. On January 30, 2000, the church formally changed its name to Mountain Shadows Baptist Church, and the new work was officially underway. By June of that same year, they purchased a ten-acre property at 947 Gantts Fort Ave. in Pueblo West and pursued a plan for a new building. With great foresight, they selected a piece of property on the north side of Pueblo West that was surrounded by only a few houses. Time proved that God had guided them to this spot as a building expansion brought many families into the area, building new houses near the new church building.
Before the new building was started, however, Pastor Salomon resigned and left the state, and Bill Gordon, former Pastor of Grace Baptist, became the new Pastor. He also became a BCP missionary church planter, and with the help of Continental Baptist Mission Builders, led the new congregation in a building program. In the summer of 2002, the building was complete and the newly merged congregation met there for the first time. April of 2003 saw the church take on their first missionaries (Glen & Tami Galbraith to Scotland and Tim Medford, a builder with CBM), and in January of 2004, they commissioned Bob and Becky Bass to Peru. Pastor Gordon remained the pastor of this mission church until the fall of 2008.
In 2009, BCP president Dave Little phoned Pastor Jim Mitchell, recently called by God to go into church planting, and asked him to consider moving from NY to CO to pastor the Mountain Shadows Baptist Church. The church was struggling, having lost some of the original members, and needed to stabilize and grow to graduate from mission status. After traveling out to CO twice, Pastor Mitchell and his wife believed the Lord was leading them to Mountain Shadows. Consequently, they resigned the pastorate at Five Mile Baptist Church in Allegany, NY, on March 15, 2009, and prepared to move. On April 15, Five Mile Baptist Church voted to be the sending church for the Mitchells and then commissioned them on May 17 as church planting missionaries to Pueblo West, CO. The Mitchells arrived on June 19, 2009, to assume leadership of this small flock of people consisting of five families.
Immediately, people responded to newspaper articles, and the number attending doubled. This resulted in a new excitement and an increase in giving. New chairs were purchased, and other upgrades were done. Thirteen months later, Mountain Shadows was able to pay off the $58,000 building debt and start saving for a new addition to the building. By the Easter service nine months later, 70 people had gathered, and at the 2011 Easter service, the attendance was 103. As Christ was exalted and the Word of God preached, God was giving the increase. By faith, the members of Mountain Shadows sacrificially gave to pay for an addition to the original building, all in cash. Ten years after the first building project, CBM Builders returned to Pueblo West to assist with the addition, which doubled the size of the auditorium, added two classrooms, bathrooms, and closed in the carport, while also refreshing all other spaces. During the project, services were once again held at the Rec Center at Liberty Point.
The service on May 18, 2014 saw the building dedicated and Pastor Ryan Lundquist officially candidated to be the first pastor of MSBC. In June, he accepted the call, and by July, he and his family moved to Pueblo West to officially start in August. Jim and Ryan worked together for 6 months before God moved the Mitchells to Thousand Oaks, CA, to work with another struggling congregation. January 18, 2015, was graduation day and the installation service for Pastor Lundquist. The service included comments from pastors Gordon, Mitchell, and Lundquist, along with Dr. Anderson and other invited guests, to celebrate what God had done.
Over the years, God has accomplished incredible things! Many people have placed their trust in Christ. Several people have been obedient in following the Lord through baptism. Vacation Bible School, held every summer, has allowed us to impact the lives of hundreds of children and their parents. We’ve hosted 2 teen missions trip summer groups and sent one ministry team to Eureka, MT to help build a permanent building for Valley Baptist Church alongside our missionaries the Genung’s. The church ordained Pastor Ryan in 2023, and February 16th of 2025 is the church’s celebration of God’s work over 25 years. As we look to the future, we are excited to continue serving God in reaching Pueblo West and the world.

Pastor Ryan grew up in Minnesota and placed his faith in Christ at the age of 8 through the ministry of Blaine Baptist Church.  He was baptized shortly after salvation and attended BBC until he graduated from High School.
Ryan attended Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA where he earned a bachelor's degree in Pastoral Studies.  It was during this time that he met Joy and they were married in 2007.  During the summer of 2008, he served as an intern at Altoona Regular Baptist Church in Altoona, IA.  At the end of the summer, he was asked to stay and continue to work with the young people. May 2009, Ryan graduated from College and in June he was called to be the associate pastor of ARBC.
June of 2014, Mountain Shadows Baptist Church voted to call Ryan as their first full-time pastor.
